This project engaged with a range of neighborhood stakeholders as well as invitations via this website to garner input and collect invaluable stories that contributed to the installation and the ongoing archive. Here are some of those events.
The Other Washingtons team and Arts + Public Life hosted an intimate luncheon with neighborhood partners and community members whose perspectives help shape the cultural life of Washington Park. Over a shared meal and artist-led creative prompt, guests reflected on naming, legacy, and the people we choose to memorialize in public space, contributing their stories and insights to the evolving Other Washingtons archive.
On February 16, community members gathered at the Washington Park Refectory for Who We Remember, a President's Day public activation inspired by the forthcoming "Other Washingtons" public art installation at 51st and King Drive. Led by Educator-in-Residence Candice Washington, the free, family-friendly event invited neighbors of all ages to honor the people, stories, and everyday lives that matter most to them. Through hands-on creative stations, story sharing, and shared reflection, participants contributed to a living, community-led archive rooted in memory, care, and local history — laying the groundwork for the larger public artwork to come.
